THREE REASONS NOT TO HIRE
A CHURCH CONSULTANT
In a recent
report by the Hartford Institute
for Religious Research, a study
by C. Kirk Hadaway suggests that
consultations are the “mainline
equivalent of a revival.” They
can boost membership growth, but
growth tapers off as the
enthusiasm wanes.
So . . .
While I offer strategic planning
seminars, here are three reasons
not to invite me.
#
One: “We’re not
being very successful,
so we should
at least “look busy.”
My
Response: Activity
is no
substitution for
effectiveness.
#
Two: “We’re too
lazy to take
responsibility for our own work. We
need a scapegoat in
case it doesn’t work
out.”
My
Response: I suppose
your mother still
does your laundry!
#
Three: “We’ve heard
that a lot of churches
are
hiring consultants, so
we’d better have one too.”
My Response:
“I suppose if everyone
jumped off a bridge....”
HOWEVER…
There are
some reason why I feel called to
offer Strategic Planning
consultation for congregations
and ministry teams.
# One: To
guide God’s people to a thorough
understanding of their present
ministry context.
#
Two: To guide God’s
people to author their own
unique
“Passionate Plan” that
provides
vision for the
future and energy for
the
long haul.
#
Three: To provide
congregational leadership
with a
renewable process for
effective ministry
planning and evaluation.
#
Four: To help foster an
environment of cohesion that
encourages participation of
a broad
spectrum of
congregational ministries
with respect for the
past and an eye to the
future, all under one “Passionate Plan.”
